Because the FAQs are really old and because the fact that every single time a new game comes for PS4 in 2021 someone thinks they can play it on an exploitable PS4 I decided to make this updated FAQ for late 2021.
Q. _________ just came out on PS4, can i play a backup of it?
A. N-O, the latest exploitable firmware is 7.55. New games that come out require at least 8.5+ some may require 9.0+. Either way not close to working on an exploitable PS4. Even 8.0 games won't work and 8.0 is kinda old now. 7.55 games stopped working after 2020 there was only 1 2021 game that worked on it that I'm aware of, Persona Strikers. Anything else you have to wait for a new exploit.
Q. But what about backports? That means i can play anything right?
A. N-O, Backports have to first be on an exploitable firmware then you can backport it to a lower firmware, so once again nothing above 7.55 will work. Nobody can play any new backups on a PS4. If the game just came out or even came out 6 months ago it will not be playable without a new exploit it's really that simple.
Q. I don't know when the game I'm interested in came out?
A. Simple Google the name of the game and add "release date" on the end and it will tell you. Example "Kena Bridge of Spirits release date" If it's 2021 you cannot play it on an exploitable PS4 right now.
Q. When will there be a new exploit?
A. Nobody knows. There was a bounty collected by Cturt on firmware 8.52 for $10,000 from Sony leading to rumors that there would be a new exploit for 8.52. But it was several months ago and nothing has come of it as of yet. Maybe it will soon or maybe it will be a nothingburger and we would have to hope for another exploit. I'm guessing sometime between the next second and the end of the planet there will be a new exploit, but I could be wrong.
Q. My PS4 is above 7.55 what can I do?
A. Either wait for a new exploit (could be years) or buy a PS4 on 7.55 or below. But once again you will be playing older games only on it.
Update 10/24/2021: Opoisso893 was able to backport Lost Judgment Japanese version to 5.05 and the original firmware was 8.52. So I guess technically any game IS possible to be backported but not by me or you most likely but someone very skilled like Opoisso893 would have to do it on a game by game basis it seems.
