Hello guys,

I found a firmware mirror at Softpedia that contains the reinstallation PUP file of 5.05 firmware. So what if I were to buy a new hard drive to make space for more games. I know that I have to install the OS on it anyway to initialize it with the PS4. Could I use that 5.05 firmware reinstallation PUP file to install 5.05 onto it?

Wouldn't that basically solve all the issues with looking for consoles that have old firmware? Like I don't even mind wiping the original 500 GB HDD and reinstalling 5.05 firmware on it from USB.

Thanks for your input.

Yes You can upgrade the internal drive USING the 5.05 RECOVERY pup this will disable your current Drive when you initalize the new one so be absolutely sure to backup everything important to you FIRST!

Also What problem are you talking about? the ability to install a new HDD has been officially supported for some time by sony..... You just need the Recovery PUP for the Firmware you are currently on (or a newer build if you plan on updating the system software) jailbreakers will want to retain 5.05..... I know the PUP is plastered all Over the web so thats no issue.

I suspect I misinterpreted you. No You cant use the PUP to downgrade a machine running 5.5. The device will only accept PUPs that are equal to or newer than the build installed currently. Even once you remove the hard drive it will still require whatever frimware you are on or newer. In short no.

Alright. Thanks. That sucks a lot. I thought it wouldn't matter because I thought that the full OS was installed on the HDD and there wouldn't be such a thorough check done by the safemode reinstallation process. That explains the people looking for consoles natively with old firmware versions and high prices :D .

I had luck. I bought a used one and it had 4.77. I did an offline upgrade to 5.05 and now enjoy the experience now. Just need a bigger HDD than the default 500 GB HGST drive. I knew that I could reinstall the OS to the same version when moving to a bigger HDD. Was just wondering if the PS4 would check and/or reject firmware versions that are different from the one installed on old HDDs.

I'm thinking about buying a 1 TB Seagate external HDD and open it up to use the internal drive for PS4. Or should I give in and spend the 25 € extra and take the 2 TB version? PS4 games are so damn huge.

Anyway. With this sad news the thread can be closed.
