"The software was closed because an error occurred"-message when I start some of my games

Hello there,

I'm using SXOS 2.9.4 with the latest Nintendo FW on a FAT32 emunand right now and I have a problem with some of my installed games. When I try to play Mario Kart 8 or Mario Odyssey, the game starts and I get the "The software was closed because an error occurred" message.
I read somewhere that cheats might be the problem, so I deleted all cheat files for the games. I also deleted the save files and everything related to those games, before installing them again with with hbg shop, but after that, I get the same error message. The same happens when I try to install them from NSP files.
I tried installing those games with SX Dumper, because I own the cartridges, but I can't play them without an update. As soon as I install an update, I get the error-message above again.
I had the idea to delete all the "personalized" game tickets in Tinfoil, because I realized that this problem mostly happens with games I actually own. Getting rid of them and installing the "custom" tickets did nothing, though.
The only game I actually got to work was Mario Maker 2, because it's small enough to run as an xci file from my FAT32 card. I can also install said xci file and it still works fine. I can't use xci files for Mario Odyssey or Mario Kart 8, though, because they're too big.

Maybe it's important to say that I had Atmosphere installed at some point, but I got rid of it for the time being. I used both CFWs side by side by changing the nintendo_path to Emutendo.

Any idea what to do? I feel like I tried everything and I'm completely at a loss.

before we blame the shitty outdated sx os installer
before we blame the infamous gamecart updated driver issue.
before we blame the shitty xci mounting beta issue (yeah no crap NSP

you are in for one of the most annoying issues. everything and anything could be the issue. since i dont have an error log I will try to kill many birds with one stone. that means not mounting anything. not using the sd card even. or tinfoil.

lets prep your console for a clean install.
  • go to settings - data management - and delete any mario save file you have there
  • also delete the game. if its mounted unmount. also delete any dlc
  • like you stated make sure no cheat engine
lets install the game again : ( mario Odyssey ON YOUR sysmem NOT on your SD, remember we are troubleshooting)
dont use that sx os garbage installer. use gold leaf for testing purposes. you can delete later. so you can go back to tinfoil.
  • in order to avoid the mounting issue ( you have to install the base game, do not mount) run the game play it for a while
  • install ( dont mount) the latest update first. run the game play it for while
  • last install the DLC run it and play it for a while.
post if you get an error message #
the only time i got an error message on my SX OS. was when running games that required higher firmware, when mounting XCI after sx os updated gamecart (something atmosphere patched and did not allow) . also got this issue more often with mario odyssey, zelda and mario cart, and minecraft

Thank you really much for your reply, that's the most elaborate answer I got anywhere so far.

Here's what I tried:
- Deleted all save files
- Deleted the game itself
- all cheats should be gone, I've never used them in any of the games but I had folders/ text files for them
- Made sure the xci isn't mounted or anything (I only have the game as an nsp anyway, because it would be too big for my FAT32 SD as an xci)
- Installed the game with Goldleaf, this time on the internal memory
- Tried to launch the game but I got the "Your software is outdated" message and couldn't play it at all
- Installed the latest update on my internal memory
- Started the game
- Got the same error message as always

Did I do anything wrong here?

I also wanna mention that the SD card isn't broken or anything, it's brand new and I actually tried 3 different SD cards with a cloned emunand and got the error everywhere.

so you are installing an NSP with a ticket on sx os without sigpatches i assume ?
or was the NSP converted from a ticketless XCI?
you mentioned installing with tinfoil and enabling standard crypto?

can you go to System Settings - Data Management - Software -> (game) -Check for Corrupt Data.

were you using cheats from Edizon ? if so and have save files save them on your computer but delete Edizon completely from your sd try again
can you do this test.
there is really no useful reason to be on 9.2.0 specially when its a new release and honest SX os BETA is not great with new firmwares. can you go down to 9.1.0 if nothing works. ?

you also mentioned both sysnand and emunand are on 9.2.0 right ?

cuz sx os updates the gamecart driver and you cannot use CFW lower than 9.0.0. attempting to do so with cause a problem or a crash

I hope I can answer everything correctly

I got the nsp files from reddit, but I assume they were not converted from a XCI file. I tried several nsp files from several places, just to make sure. Also tried to install the game with hbg shop.

I tried that but it didn't change anything.

Tried that as well but it says the data is fine.

My sysnand is actually on fw 4.0.1 because I wanted to keep it as low as possible, just in case.

Maybe I'll format my SD card and make a completely new emunand, because that's the only thing I haven't tried yet.

dont format the card YET .
what you are dealing with is one of the most annoying and yet to be identified exactly what the problem is.
the last person i helped fixed this issue by downloading mario kart from one of our uploaders Alvro and installing the NSP (not using the XCI )
that being said. if you followed my previous instructions that means you already tried most of the simple solutions people have tried.

can you do everyone a favor for testing purposes ? ( I no longer have SX OS pro license.i cant reproduce your issue . the switch i am using does not have a pro license)

can you use another SD card ? even a 1gb or a 2gb you have getting dust in your drawer. format it to fat32
put copy and paste your sx os and boot try to run the game (dont use any other homebrew app other than the homebrew.nro and gold leaf) if the game does not run unistall and reinstall the game again (to your sysnand again)

if it does not work: (i really want to try to pin point if the issue is the ticket on the NSP when installed in SX OS
If I could abuse your generosity. could you use atmosphere ?
go to this website https://sdsetup.com/console?switch
download only the ones i have marked down

Screenshot (167).png
you will need sigpatches to run the game in atmosphere.
unistall the game again from sysnand and reinstall with gold leaf again to sysnand. run the base game first, then update and run, last dlc and run.

PS if you have used atmopshere before use TegraRMCGUI to send payload please

Alright, I see what I can do. I will report back when I'm done.

Edit: Also, I don't feel safe installing anything directly to my sysnand because I want to stay unbanned. I see what I can do though, if it might help others.

I see what you are saying.
unless you are using a separate hidden partition on your SD card for your emuMMC with 90DNS and incognito mode hiding your proinfo. chances are you could still get banned. (restoring nandbaup is the only way to wipe NEW your console) (no resetings to default settins does nothing) but i am sure you know that.

either way. dont install to your sys. dont forget to come back and post if you find any solution even if its dumb ans simple (like using a diff SD card) or even downloading another mario NSP.

That's actually my setup right now, hidden emunand, 90DNS and incognito mode.
I found a way to install Mario Odyssey, btw, but it's really weird. I had an old super XCI with all the updates, called "Super Mario Odyssey [0100000000010000] + (v262144 UPD).xci", so I put that on an external flash drive and it started just fine. I was also able to install it and everything works now. Seems like I can install every xci, but nsp files give me that error.
It MIGHT be because I split the nsp files on my own, to make them fit on my FAT32 card. However, Goldleaf had no problem with them. There's also the fact that the versions downloaded from hbg shop didn't work, either.
Also, Mario Maker 2 didn't need to be split or anything and it gave me the same error until I installed an xci version.

I have absolutely no clue... seems like I can only install xci files for some reason.

i think anyone who reads this will tell you that you are all over the place.
for example having so os and installing xci files. (in stead of mounting)
also splitting nsp files. ( because i have a guide to install NSP files over USB) no need to split them
splitting NSP files to fit your SD card to be installer later.

the fact that the HBG shop did not work is the real problem. then again it could be tinfoil

damn it so much room for error.

either way you got them working. hopefully your adventure will help someone who reads this

I know it sounds chaotic as hell, but there are reasons for all of it.
I don't have access to a huge flash drive right now, I just put the Mario Odyssey XCI on an old 8gb USB stick I could somehow spare. Since I can't run it from the FAT32 SD card, it makes more sense to just install it instead of having a USB stick in my console all the time (I also use handheld mode a lot). Also the only reason I actually installed the xci yesterday was for test purposes, to see if it still runs when the file isn't mounted.
I also have many nsps because I originally wanted to switch to Atmosphere for ulaunch, but I didn't really like it.

As for HBG Shop.. I THINK it installs games just fine, as long as I don't physically own them.
