Gentoo Linux Speed

Hey everyone, Does anyone know what sort of read/write speed I need for Gentoo linux to run smoothly? So I installed it on a 64gb 3.1 usb and it is like the whole operating system runs really slow. I did a speed test on the usb and its read is around 37mbs is this to slow or?

37 MB/s? That is just a little faster than max speed of USB 2.0. I have USB thumb drives that have read speeds over 150 MB/s. So yeah your USB thumb drive is probably too slow.

I did the same on a lexar usb 3.1 64gb usb stick rated at 212MB/s and it still slows down to a crawl randomly. It ended up dying on me after a forced reboot. I got after an ssd drive (sata3) for cheap (around $45 for 250GB 3D Nand) instead and its blazing fast like on a pc. Just upgrade to a good quality ssd like Crucial MX series, its a good investment beyond the linux on ps4. Buying a quality one is important for reliability and no overheating and consistent speed. I will never buy usb sticks again! so PS: for the ssd usb3 enclosure make sure it supports UASP, it frees the cpu from managing data transfers.

Lexar? Honestly, that brand is basically one of the cheapest and unpopular brands. So I wouldn't trust it.

Yep, a SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure will do much better. Great job :) .
