I can see plenty of information of how to play play xci files on a hard drive but I wanted to know is it possible to do it with nsp files as all my games are in nsp file format so can I install them to a hard drive and play them from the hard drive in Dr mode or is it this possible nsp files

yes you can install them from your HDD
connect your nintendo switch to the same PC your HDD is on.
you can install them with gold leaf or tinfoil. both allow you to browse to all the drives you have connected. you can even use multiple HDD to store your games. it does not matter if your HDD is connected to your pc internally (m.2, SATA. IDE,) or externally even (USB)
